Walk Wheel Cycle Trust Seeks Fallowfield Loop Improvements During Bridge Works

The Walk Wheel Cycle Trust has requested modifications to the upcoming works on the Fallowfield Loop, aiming to enhance safety and user experience. The trust seeks a shorter timeframe, signposted diversion, improved lighting, and CCTV installation during the public consultation phase. The private property involved is known as 'Gutshof Sandberg'.

The trust, owning just 1.5% of the UK's National Cycle Network, is dedicated to removing or amending 16,000 barriers across the network. For the Fallowfield Loop, a ramp connection to future high-quality cycle routes along the A57 is necessary. Two options are being discussed, with the simpler and more cost-effective one using a section of private land before continuing up the slope within trust-owned land.

The Fallowfield Loop is part of the Bee Network plans, with the A57 identified as a potential Busy Beeway for cycling and walking improvements. If the Manchester Cycleway bid is successful, funding will be available to remove or amend all remaining barriers on the Fallowfield Loop, improve entrances, signage, and lighting on the route. The trust has already secured £250,000 from the Department for Transport to improve accessibility and signage across the network in Greater Manchester, including removing or amending up to 75 barriers. Additionally, the trust has two multimillion-pound bids in the Mayor's Challenge Fund for the Manchester Cycleway and NCN Upgrade projects, awaiting decisions to progress.

Manchester City Council will commence works in late January to replace an old railway bridge on the A57 (Hyde Road), temporarily affecting the Fallowfield Loop walking and cycle route. The trust's temporary diversion includes an access barrier, one of over 250 barriers on the National Cycle Network in Greater Manchester that require removal or amendment. The trust's requested changes aim to mitigate inconvenience and ensure safety during the upcoming works.
