Vietnam positions fifth among top destinations for expatriates in 2025
In a recent survey published by global expat network InterNations, Vietnam has been recognised as the world's fifth-best country for expatriates. The annual survey, titled Expat Insider, ranks 46 destinations worldwide based on various factors including quality of life, ease of settling in, working abroad, personal finance, and expat essentials.
Vietnam's overall ranking of fifth place is a testament to the country's growing appeal among expats. The survey revealed that most foreigners working in Vietnam in 2025 are employed in sectors such as electricity, electronics, clothing, and consumer goods processing, primarily in industrial parks like An Duong and Do Son.
In terms of quality of life, Vietnam scores quite low, landing at 34th place. However, the country topped the Personal Finance Index for the fifth year consecutively. The Personal Finance Index measures expats' satisfaction with factors like the general cost of living, their financial situation, and whether a respondent's disposable household income is enough to lead a comfortable life. Nearly nine in ten respondents were satisfied with the cost of living in Vietnam, and about 87% of respondents stated that their disposable income was enough or more than enough to live comfortably in Vietnam.
Vietnam ranks 11th in the Ease of Settling In index, 11th in the Working Abroad index, and 8th out of 46 countries in the General Happiness Index. The survey also found that 54% of expats have lived in Vietnam for five or more years already, with 30% of expats wanting to stay in Vietnam forever.
Interestingly, 74% of the respondents for Vietnam in the survey are male. Satisfaction with their financial situation in Vietnam (4th out of 46 destinations) may contribute to keeping expats in the country. Housing affordability in Vietnam is a key draw for expatriates, with expats reporting that finding accommodation is relatively easy compared to other countries.
The Expat Insider survey provides valuable insights into the experiences of expats living in Vietnam. As the country continues to attract foreign talent and investment, it is important to understand the factors that contribute to a positive experience for expats living and working in Vietnam.
