Ascension and Pentecost holidays in Lower Saxony's popular vacation regions are witnessing robust booking rates, with the North Sea Coast and East Frisia, the Harz Mountains, and Lüneburg Heath attracting numerous tourists. According to a survey by the German Press Agency, these spring holidays, falling on May 29 and shortly after, are highly sought after for domestic travel.
North Sea Coast and East Frisia
Long weekends around Ascension and Pentecost are among the busiest travel periods of the year for the North Sea Coast and East Frisia, offering a brief escape for visitors. "Guests flock to the coast for an extended weekend," says Wiebke Leverenz, spokesperson for East Frisia Tourism GmbH in Leer. Bookings for 2025 are on par with 2024, with accommodations in East Frisian holiday spots occupying 70 to 90% of their capacity, with some exceeding the 90% mark. Hosts are generally satisfied, although they hope for improved weather to draw more day-trippers to the coast.
The East Frisian Islands are expected to be fully booked once again. The Norden-Frisia shipping company plans additional ferry departures for Juist and Norderney, indicating a high demand for these island getaways. With 13 departures to Norderney on Ascension Day and 19 on Wednesday, ferries are predicted to be full on the return journey, and some ferries from Norderney to Norddeich are already fully booked.
Harz Mountains
In the Lower Saxon hill country, booking status for the Pentecost holidays is similar to last year. "We are already well-booked," says a tourism association spokesperson. Positive signs are emerging from campsites as well. Good weather, particularly sunshine and dry conditions, could lead to an increase in tourist numbers compared to 2024. While there are still available beds for couples and smaller families, the Harz hosts are optimistic about the holiday season.
Lüneburg Heath
"Ascension is almost fully booked, with a few remaining places," reports Ulrich von dem Bruch, managing director of Lüneburg Heath GmbH. Pentecost remains somewhat freer but will fill up quickly. Lüneburg Heath is once again welcoming many hikers.
