UK increases the substantial entry tariff

Since October 1, 2021, German travelers have been required to hold a passport to visit the United Kingdom, according to a ruling by the Frankfurt Higher Regional Court. This rule applies not only to direct flights but also to bookings with layovers made via online platforms.

For German visitors, the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is an additional requirement alongside a passport to enter the UK. The ETA system, based on the US Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), which was introduced in 2009, can be applied for online or via an app. The UK government recommends using the app for the application process.

The ETA application requires travelers to provide their address and occupation details, answer security questions, and upload a current portrait photo for those aged nine and above. The ETA is linked directly to the passport and can be viewed digitally at border control.

Starting April 2, 2025, EU citizens will also need an ETA to enter the UK. The cost of the ETA fee will increase from £10 to £16 (around 21 euros) on this date. As a result, the cost of entering the UK for a family of four will increase from 52 to 84 euros.

To avoid delays, it is recommended to apply for the ETA at least three days before travel. Without authorization, check-in is usually not possible. Travel agencies and booking platforms are required to inform their customers about the ETA requirement.

More and more countries are now using pre-registration as a security measure for visa-free travel. The ETA requirement for EU citizens to enter the UK comes into effect on April 2, 2025, and applications can be made since March 5, 2025.

The fee increase for the ETA will take effect on April 9, 2025. The cost of the ETA will increase by 60%, from £10 to 16 pounds (around 21 euros). It is important for travelers to be aware of these changes to ensure a smooth travel experience.
