Get ready for a musical extravaganza! Scheeßel, Lower Saxony is bracing itself for tens of thousands of music enthusiasts descending upon its borders. Kicking off the long weekend of musical madness, several bands will take the stage from the afternoon onwards on the eve of the festival's official commencement. The opening acts include Hansemädchen, a local choir, and indie-punk band Hi! Spencer.
Performances from artists all around the globe will dominate the festival grounds in the Rotenburg district until Sunday. The lineup boasts several big names including the US punk band Green Day, rapper Apache 207, singer Nina Chuba, indie band Jeremias, and the British band The Prodigy, as announced by the organizer FKP Scorpio. This duo of festivals - the Hurricane in Scheeßel and its sister event Southside in Neuhaus ob Eck - ranks among the largest open-air music events in Germany. The festivities will wrap up late on Sunday evening.
The musical and thematic spectrum is vast, catering to every beat and cause. Through a collaboration with the Music Saves Ukraine initiative, the band Love'n'Joy will take center stage. The trio, hailing from Ukraine, is said to be one of the most popular indie rock bands in the country. Their performance aims to raise awareness about the ongoing war of aggression and the resilient cultural scene in Ukraine.
In addition to the music, satirist Jan Böhmermann and activist Luisa Neubauer will grace the stage. Neubauer is reportedly set to speak on a stage about the climate crisis and radical optimism.
With 78,000 tickets on sale per day, selling around 65,000 as of Wednesday, it's no wonder camping facilities are in high demand. Campers have the option of settling in a large camping area or a more secluded, cleaner one. For those preferring a more comfortable experience, there's a resort offering luxurious tent accommodations and cabins with walls, beds, and electricity.
The Hurricane Festival is under close surveillance by the police, who control access and maintain a presence of roughly 500 officers on the festival grounds daily. They also staff a round-the-clock mobile station. In a statement, police director Dieter Klingforth expressed that ensuring safety is paramount while fostering an enjoyable festival experience.
