Preparations are underway for Whitsun weekend on Germany's largest North Sea island, Sylt, a year after the controversial outbreak of racist chanting in Club Pony that tarnished the island's reputation. Thousands of partygoers are poised to flock to the island, with Kampen's tourist hotspot also attracting a significant portion of the crowd.

Birgit Friese, Kampen's tourism chief, displays a relaxed demeanor, acknowledging, "We're eagerly anticipating the arrival of many young people who will be joyfully celebrating in our village and on the island."

Although no specific figures from previous Whitsun tourist influxes on the island are available, Sylt Marketing GmbH (SMG) reported 101,907 visitors in the entire month of May 2023. Current stats for 2025 are yet to be released.

Remnants of the Club Pony scandal have left their mark on this year's Whitsun festivities. Club Pony will now feature designated "safe spaces" and entrance bands adorned with anti-racism messages, aiming to foster an inclusive and respectful atmosphere.

The Club Pony Scandal and Investigations

Video footage from Whitsun Saturday 2024 showed a group of partygoers in Kampen singing racially charged slogans such as "Germany for the Germans - Foreigners out!" to the melody of the hit song "L'amour toujours" by Gigi D'Agostino. After the footage went viral, investigations were initiated, including for suspected incitement to the masses.

Charges were subsequently dropped against three of the four alleged perpetrators by the Flensburg public prosecutor's office. However, one individual is facing a criminal complaint for imitation of the Hitler salute.

Such incidents of racially charged chants to "L'amour toujours" are not new and have been reported in various German states before and after the Sylt scandal.
