Alibek Kaiyrbek Brings the Sounds of Kazakhstan to new Heights

Alibek Kaiyrbek, a dombra player from Kazakhstan, has made a name for himself by performing traditional Kazakh music atop some of the world's highest peaks. His latest achievement was playing the legendary kui "Adai" on Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, standing at 5,895 meters above sea level.

Kaiyrbek's next goal is to conquer Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America. Before that, he plans to acclimatize on Lenin Peak, Mount Ararat, and Mount Damavand. During his expeditions, Kaiyrbek gives small lectures and concerts at base camps, introducing people to the dombra's rich history, Kazakh culture, and inspiring them to explore the country.

Last year, Kaiyrbek summited Mount Elbrus (5,642 meters) in the Caucasus, where he performed "Adai" on the dombra and raised the Kazakh flag at the peak. The physical and mental challenges involved in mountaineering at Elbrus did not deter Kaiyrbek, who believes his journey, sharing the story of Kazakhstan through the sounds of the dombra, is worth the effort.

Climbing Kilimanjaro was no exception. Kaiyrbek carried the dombra during his climb, which took up half the space in his summit backpack. Despite the challenge of tuning the dombra in strong winds, the sound remained pure and atmospheric. Kaiyrbek's performance on Mount Kilimanjaro spanned approximately seven days.

The unique nature and vibrant people of Tanzania made Kaiyrbek's journey unforgettable. The Tanzanian guides, porters, and carriers left a deep impression on him with their energy, positivity, dedication, and sincerity. The dombra piqued the curiosity of fellow climbers and tourists, with some calling Kaiyrbek "samurai" due to the dombra case resembling a katana.

Kaiyrbek's project aims to promote Kazakhstan beyond its borders. His performances atop some of the world's highest peaks carry the spirit of Kazakhstan to new heights, exciting tourists and climbers about visiting the country. However, Kaiyrbek's expeditions require substantial financial resources, and he needs support to continue his mission.

In the past, Kaiyrbek has shared Kazakh hospitality in extreme conditions, making his performances even more memorable. His concerts at base camps not only entertain but also educate, introducing people to the rich history and culture of Kazakhstan.

Kaiyrbek's journey is more than just a mountaineering expedition. It's a testament to the power of music and culture to bring people together and inspire them to explore the world and its diverse cultures.
