The Commission has been advised on the proposed resolution regarding the execution of the EU's overseas policy plan.
In light of the ongoing border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, travellers are advised to exercise caution and be aware of the significant safety advisories in place.
Thailand
The Travel Advisory Level for Thailand has been set to exercise increased caution, with specific areas marked as "Do Not Travel" near the Cambodian border [2]. The border area risks are particularly high, and it is strongly recommended not to travel to areas within 50km of the Thai-Cambodian border due to ongoing fighting between Thai and Cambodian military forces [2]. This includes regions like Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear provinces in Cambodia.
Additionally, there is ongoing civil unrest in the southernmost provinces of Thailand (Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat) due to insurgent activities, which remain under a state of emergency [2].
Cambodia
Similar to Thailand, areas near the border with Thailand in Cambodia are risky due to ongoing clashes. It is strongly advised to avoid all but essential travel within 50km of the border. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all but essential travel within 50km of the border with Thailand in Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear provinces [3].
General Recommendations
Both governments and foreign ministries advise avoiding non-essential travel near the border due to the risks of violence and armed conflict. Several tourist sites, including temples near the border, have been closed temporarily.
Economic Impact
The conflict is also affecting Thailand's tourism economy, as the situation deters visitors and impacts local businesses, particularly in areas near the border [4]. Numerous border crossings between Cambodia and Thailand are currently closed due to the conflict.
For more information and updates, travellers are encouraged to check the latest travel advisories from their respective governments and foreign ministries. Stay safe and enjoy your travels!
