Synthetic opioids are shaking up the drug marketplace
Germany may not be in the throes of an opioid crisis like the US, but synthetic substances like fentanyl still pose a significant danger. The Frankfurt drug referral office's acting head, Oliver Müller-Maar, warned of the enormous dynamics at an international conference.
Nowadays, over 88 new opioid variants have been reported to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction since 2009. These substances are quickly and cheaply produced in labs, as Freiburg forensic pathologist Volker Auwärter explains. A minor chemical change can result in a new substance, available in various forms like powders, tablets, patches, sprays, or liquid for electronic vaporizers.
Fentanyl, for instance, is 100 times stronger than morphine, while nitazenes could be 500 times stronger. The issue lies in the fact these substances can be harmful or even deadly when consumed without knowledge of their potency or effects. Overdoses can lead to respiratory failure, with most deaths occurring among experimental users who order substances online and underestimate the dose.
Nina Kim Bekier, the chief physician of the clinic for addiction diseases at the Frankfurt Bürgerhospital, also reports a growing number of emergency calls involving fentanyl and the increasing demand for opioid detoxification. Frankfurt's drug support facilities are concerned that synthetic opioids are increasingly being mixed with heroin. Health commissioner Elke Voitl (Greens) explains this trend arises due to less opium poppy being grown in Afghanistan, leading to a heroin shortage on the global market.
Despite the looming threat, authorities and support facilities are working to counter this menace. A federal government law lays the groundwork for drug testing, wherein users could have their drugs chemically analyzed, preventing them from consuming unknown substances with unpredictable effects. However, Hesse's black-red state government has not yet issued implementing regulations.
In January, fentanyl was detected in 21 heroin samples in a Frankfurt consumption room. The police headquarters informed the State Criminal Police Office (LKA), emphasizing the importance of drug checking to help prevent unknowing consumption of dangerous substances.
However, there's ongoing debate regarding how these tests should be conducted. Forensic pathologist Auwärter cautions against rapid tests due to their inaccuracy, while drug support facility representatives argue that their clientele is unwilling to wait days for lab results.
