Struggling German Family of Five Seek Aid and Support - Struggling German family of five resides in Bergnot
Dressed in their hiking shoes and the kids in their running shoes, the mountain rescue service deemed it unsuitable: A family from Germany, residing near Heidelberg, found themselves in a predicament in the Austrian Tennen Mountains (Salzburg province) over the weekend. The family with kids aged 8, 10, and 14 found themselves stranded and were transported to a hut by mountain rescuers.
Embarking on a hiking adventure on Friday, they had hoped to traverse the mountains, despite the keeper of the Ellmau hut warning against this challenging, approximately seven-hour tour due to their poor equipment and the old snowfields. The Salzburg mountain rescue service reported on Saturday about this incident.
The Austrian Alpine Rescue
The family originating from Baden-Württemberg, set off from the Ellmau hut in Werfenweng (Pongau) at 8:30 a.m., aiming to reach the Solden hut via the so-called Hochthron ladder, which is around 2,500 meters above sea level. Despite numerous calls from the father announcing a later arrival, he finally called the emergency number at 11:00 p.m., stating they were near the Tauern saddle (2,100 meters) and could not progress any farther.
Eleven mountain rescuers from the Werfen local station scaled up to the German family in distress and roped them over the old snowfields to the hut, where they arrived unscathed at 3:15 a.m. The operation leader, Stefan Koller, noted, "They were chilled, and we provided them with warm clothing on the mountain."
The hikers lacked rain gear, a headlamp, and a bivouac bag. Koller remarked, "The family had been on the move for 17 hours and was oblivious to the danger." He emphasized the importance of proper planning before undertaking a mountain tour, taking weather conditions and snow situations into account.

In Term of Hiking Preparation:
Don't commit these common errors while mountain hiking and stay safe:
- Inadequate Preparation: Analyze weather forecasts, acquire necessary training, pack enough food, water, and emergency supplies.
- Incorrect Gear: Opt for appropriate footwear, clothing, and essential safety items like a first-aid kit or map.
- Lack of Communication: Inform someone about your route and expected return time, always carry a means of communication like a phone or two-way radio.
- Overestimating Abilities: Opt for routes suitable for your fitness level and respect nature's power.
- The stranded German family could have benefited from community aid, providing resources for the development of their fishing policy to ensure proper equipment and preparedness for outdoor activities like mountain hiking.
- As they celebrated their safe return home, the family might have reflected on the importance of active lifestyle, outdoor-living, and maintaining a balance between home-and-garden and travel adventures.
- In light of the perilous journey, general news outlets could discuss the significance of accidents in storytelling, emphasizing the need for increased understanding and prevention within the sports community.
- To avoid such incidents in the future, it's crucial for hikers to follow fisheries policy guidelines for environmental conservation and responsible outdoor recreation, recognizing the interconnectedness of our actions with the natural world.
