Singapore's colossal new airport terminal at Changi marks a significant progression

Changi Airport in Singapore is embarking on one of the most ambitious airport projects worldwide with the construction of Terminal 5. The company responsible for this development is the Changi Airport Group (CAG), which manages and oversees the airport infrastructure, including Terminal 5.

The new terminal, set to begin operations in the mid-2030s, will offer a capacity of up to 50 million passengers per year. It will be more than just a functional airport, also serving as a leisure and business destination for locals. Terminal 5's design aims to establish Changi Airport as one of the central global hubs in the long term.

Terminal 5 will feature an integrated transportation hub that unites rail, bus, taxi, and other transport services under one roof, providing seamless transitions between air and sea travel. Its proximity to the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal enables easy transitions between air and sea travel. The terminal will also be directly connected to the Thomson-East Coast Line and Cross Island Line MRT lines.

Sustainability is at the heart of Terminal 5's strategy. It will have one of the largest solar rooftop systems in Singapore, capable of powering approximately 20,000 four-room apartments for a year. The use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is also part of its climate-friendly approach. The terminal is designed to be a "Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy Building."

Digitization is another key focus area for Terminal 5. It is integrating AI and robotics for the digitization of baggage handling, security checks, and passenger movements. A central "Integrated Operations Centre" will monitor and control all operations in real-time.

The Asia-Pacific region's air traffic is expected to be one of the most dynamic globally over the next two decades. Terminal 5's design and strategy are aligned with this growth, aiming to establish Changi Airport as a central hub in the region.

Terminal 5 will be situated near the new Changi East Urban District, offering open public spaces and creating a vibrant, lively atmosphere. It aims to be more than just an airport, also serving as a destination for locals and visitors alike.

The construction of Terminal 5 at Changi Airport marks an exciting step forward in the airport's evolution, promising a sustainable, connected, and innovative future for travelers in Singapore and beyond.
