Robust Collaboration: Productive Discussion Held Between Dormagen and Chipata

In a bid to further strengthen the bond between the cities, Dormagen and Chipata held a successful work meeting from September 3rd to 8th. The event marked an important milestone in the partnership, which was established in December 2014, and has seen significant growth over the past three years.

The meeting, which took place ahead of the 6th partnership conference between municipalities from Germany and Sub-Saharan Africa, was a platform for discussions about various projects and initiatives. City director Donald Mwanza and Angela Kampinda, coordinator of the reforestation project, led the Chipata delegation, while Lieselotte Heinz, Dormagen's coordinator for the city partnership, represented the German city.

One of the key topics of discussion was the 50 donated laptops and their contribution to the digitization of the city administration in Chipata. The delegation also focused on the exchange of experiences from the past three years and the planning of future projects. The urgently needed urban drainage plan for Chipata was discussed, with a focus on environmentally friendly discharge of rainwater and wastewater.

The meeting also highlighted the deployment of a donated fire engine, which has already extinguished 98 fires. The importance of seeking funding and implementation partners for the realization of projects was also emphasized.

The cities' open and friendly hospitality was a major factor in making the delegation from Chipata feel right at home in Dormagen. The delegation exchanged with 47 other municipal partnerships from 18 African countries and Germany at the partnership conference. Important contacts for future projects were established at the conference.

The partnership association will be formally established in December, with further details to be disclosed that may include formalizing agreements or expanding cooperative projects, as seen with other partnerships described.

To make the city partnership more visible and accessible, a hands-on event for kids and a film screening at the city library on Zambia's Independence Day, October 24th, are planned. The "Evening of Encounters" at the Historic Town Hall was another highlight of the meeting, where guests learned about life in Chipata and the partnership work so far.

Mayors George Mwanza from Chipata and Erik Lierenfeld shared their impressions of the first mutual visits. The meeting served as a crucial foundation for future cooperation between the two cities. The delegation from Dormagen and Chipata traveled to Gießen for the partnership conference from September 8th to 11th, 2025.

Over 10,000 new trees were planted in Chipata, reforesting an area the size of 28 football fields, demonstrating the commitment of both cities towards sustainable development. The partnership between Dormagen and Chipata continues to grow, with both cities looking forward to a bright future of cooperation.
