Rise in Tourist Fees Proposed for Famous Italian Town
The picturesque city of Venice is gearing up for another season of entry fees, a measure aimed at managing mass tourism that has been in place for three years now. The next round of the fee will take place from April 3, 2026, to July 26, 2026.
During this period, day-trippers will be required to pay an entry fee to spend a few hours in the streets around St. Mark's Square and the Rialto Bridge. The exact amount of the future fee has not yet been disclosed, but it is expected to increase from the current peak-season fee of between five and ten euros per day.
The entry fee has been a controversial measure among critics, who argue that it may not significantly deter visitors from coming to Venice. However, the city administration has collected more than five million euros during the current "trial phase" of the fee, with over 720,000 day-trippers registering during the current year.
Despite the fee, many visitors have managed to avoid paying the access charge. Venice, an expensive city where a cup of cappuccino at St. Mark's Square can cost up to 17 euros, continues to attract tourists in large numbers.
The entry fee is part of Venice's efforts to control mass tourism and preserve the city's historic sites. From early April to late July in 2026, there will be a total of 60 days when day-trippers will be required to pay the fee, an increase from the 29 days in the first year and the 54 days in the second year.
Critics argue that the fee may disproportionately affect lower-income visitors and local residents who visit the city frequently. However, the city administration maintains that the fee is necessary to manage the influx of tourists and protect Venice's unique charm and heritage.
As the city prepares for another season of entry fees, the debate continues over the best ways to balance tourism and preservation in one of the world's most beautiful cities.
