Hamburg's Harburg Museum Seeks a Temporary Home in the Historic Karstadt Building

Germany's Harburg Museum is currently upping sticks and moving into the massive, empty Karstadt building, a 30,000 square meter marvel that once housed a renowned department store. Armed with a staggering €300,000, the museum aims to transform a fraction of the sprawling storefront into a vibrant exhibition space of 400 square meters and a 200 square meter lecture area.

But this isn't just a stopgap measure. The museum, long known for its knack for breathing life into the lifeless corners of Harburg, views this move as a chance to engage with an untapped demographic. Museum director Prof. Dr. Rainer-Maria Weiss likens it to the museum "going to the people who don't go to the museum," a bold yet shrewd move.

The museum's temporary stay in the Karstadt building is expected to span around ten years, possibly longer, as a renovation or new construction project takes shape on the property. Should the museum's lease on its current location expire, the "Karstadt" site could prove to be a permanent new home. The adult education center and the library have also expressed interest in the vacant building.

The city subsidizes the costs associated with running the massive Karstadt building, but it remains uncertain how hefty these costs will be. The museum, despite being the trendsetter in Harburg's reinvention, lacks the financial resources to sustain a long-term stay in the grand building without assistance.

While no private entities have yet announced plans to occupy the building and generate income, the city continues to explore potential partnerships with creative visionaries, eager to leave a lasting mark on this historic landmark.

Should the Karstadt building remain vacant for an extended period, the museum's temporary move would be a welcome alternative to the yawning void that currently occupies the space. An abandoned, colossal relic of a former age, the Karstadt building offers promise as a canvas for the cultural rebirth of Harburg.

  1. The museum's temporary relocation to the Karstadt building provides an opportunity to extend its reach to a wider audience, including those interested in other aspects such as fashion-and-beauty, food-and-drink, home-and-garden, and travel, beyond traditional exhibit-goers.
  2. As the city explores potential partnerships with creative visionaries, there is a possibility that the Karstadt building could be transformed into a vibrant hub showcasing a variety of lifestyles, including fashion, food, home, garden, and travel.
  3. In the absence of other tenants, the museum's temporary occupation of the Karstadt building could serve as a means to rejuvenate the building and offer an engaging experience for the public, making it a potential candidate for a permanent home.
