The Ohio case sets the new benchmark with an embryo stored over 31 years before birth. Previously, the record was held by twins born in 2022 from embryos frozen in 1992. Archerd, the donor, was able to set preferences for what families would adopt her embryos through Snowflakes, a division of Nightlight Christian Adoptions.
This method of embryo adoption has been around since the 1990s and is gaining traction as some fertility clinics and advocates oppose discarding leftover embryos. In fact, about 1.5 million frozen embryos are currently being stored throughout the U.S., and approximately 2% of births in the U.S. are the result of in vitro fertilization.
