Munich Transport Updates for Oktoberfest 2025
As the Oktoberfest celebration approaches, Munich's public transport system will adjust its services to accommodate the influx of visitors. Here's a summary of the changes for buses, trams, and subways in the city.
September 21
- Bus line 132 will operate on a reduced route from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., serving Forstenrieder Park, Harras, Implerstraße, and Fraunhoferstraße.
- Tram 16 will also run a reduced route from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with stops at Romanplatz, Hackerbrücke (ZOB), Hauptbahnhof Nord, and Karlsplatz (Stachus).
- Bus line 52 will operate on a shortened route from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., stopping at Tierpark (Alemannenstraße), Candidplatz, Kolumbusplatz Nord, Mariahilfplatz, and Baaderstraße.
- Tram 17 will be diverted from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with sections running between Hauptbahnhof Nord and Max-Weber-Platz via Karlsplatz (Stachus), and between Sendlinger Tor and St. Emmeram.
- Tram 18 will be interrupted from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with sections running between Gondrellplatz and Stachus, and between Sendlinger Tor and Schwanseestraße.
- Tram lines 20 and 21 stop at Hauptbahnhof and Hauptbahnhof Nord, offering easy walks to Theresienwiese from either stop.
- Tram lines 27 and 28 will run on reduced routes from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., serving Petuelring / Scheidplatz, Kurfürstenplatz, Pinakotheken, and Karlsplatz (Stachus).
- A shuttle service will be available for participants of the Traditional Costume and Marksmen's Parade on both September 21 and 22.
- Tram 19 will not serve its full route on September 21, operating in two sections: Westendstraße - Westfriedhof and Max-Weber-Platz - Berg am Laim station.
September 22
- Bus line 153 will operate on a reduced route from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., serving Trappentreustraße - Universität.
- The CityRing 58/68 will be interrupted from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. between Hauptbahnhof Nord and Goetheplatz.
- Bus line 100 towards Ostbahnhof will be diverted from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. between Oskar-von-Miller-Ring and Königinstraße.
- Tram 13 will not serve its full route on September 22, operating in two sections: Westendstraße - Westfriedhof and Max-Weber-Platz - Berg am Laim station.
- Night trams N17, N19, N40, N41, and N45, as well as night buses N43 and N44, will serve various stops near Theresienwiese.
- Tram 21 will be interrupted from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., operating in two sections: Westfriedhof - Hauptbahnhof Nord and St.-Veit-Straße - Max-Weber-Platz.
Getting to Theresienwiese
- Tram lines 16 and 17 stop at Hackerbrucke, a few minutes' walk from Theresienwiese.
- Tram lines 18 and 19 serve Holzapfelstraße and Hermann-Lingg-Straße along Landsberger Straße/Bayerstraße, a short walk from Theresienwiese.
- MVG recommends walking from Munich Central Station to Theresienwiese via Hermann-Lingg-Straße, which takes under 15 minutes.
- Subways run to Theresienwiese every evening until 1:30 a.m. at 10-minute intervals, and six-car trains are in operation on the U4 line during this period.
- Subway lines U3 and U6 offer a less crowded alternative to U4 and U5 for reaching Theresienwiese, with stations Goetheplatz and Poccistraße being nearby.
Road Closures
On September 21, streets will be temporarily closed from 9:45 a.m. to about 12 p.m. for the Wiesn parade of the Schützenwirte (traditional innkeepers) and the traditional costume parade. These events are key festive processions marking the Oktoberfest celebration, involving thousands of participants marching through the city center to the fairgrounds.
