Meet Miguel Cuc: Advocate for Indigenous Rights and Equality
Meet Miguel Cuc, a dedicated professional with a heart for equality and equity for Indigenous Peoples. Raised in the lush Iximulew territory of the Maya Kaqchikel People, Miguel's journey is one of resilience, cultural pride, and a deep appreciation for nature.
Growing up, Miguel spoke Kaqchikel, his mother's native tongue, still widely used in his community. He fondly recalls helping his parents in the fields and playing with his siblings in the forest. However, the introduction of modern agricultural techniques brought challenges, including crop losses and unpredictable weather patterns.
Miguel's path to education was not smooth. He faced racism at school due to his limited Spanish and interactions with non-Indigenous people. Yet, he understood the importance of higher education, given the uncertainties in agriculture as a livelihood. His admiration for leaders fighting for social justice fuelled his desire to gain more professional experience and contribute to his people.
Miguel found a home at CS, joining first as a part-time consultant, then full-time, drawn to the organization's mission and vision. He is passionate about supporting Indigenous Peoples' struggles against unequal development and the destruction of traditional means of life.
Miguel Cuc, a man deeply rooted in his culture and community, is using his professional experience to advocate for the rights of Indigenous Peoples. His journey, marked by adversity and resilience, is a testament to his commitment to equality and equity.
