Lamentation over Ruth Weiss's Demise

Ruth Weiss, a renowned journalist and author, passed away on September 5th at the age of 101. Born in Fürth in 1924, Weiss spent much of her childhood in Aschaffenburg, a city that would later honour her with great distinction.

In 1936, as a Jew, Weiss was forced to emigrate to South Africa. This experience shaped her deep aversion to any form of racism and discrimination, which she tirelessly fought against for the rest of her life.

Weiss became a prominent figure in South Africa, using her platform to campaign against racism, the oppression of minorities, and for women's rights. Her tireless efforts against the apartheid regime earned her the respect and admiration of many, including Nelson Mandela, whom she met.

In 1999, Weiss first visited the Girls' Realschule Aschaffenburg and visited regularly thereafter. In 2010, the school was renamed in her honour at a grand ceremony. The Ruth-Weiss Realschule continues to uphold her values and message, as stated by Sandra Finnegan, the school's principal, who said, "We lose an extraordinary woman whose example and message bind us."

On her 100th birthday, the city and the school hosted a festive reception in the Bachsaal and a school festival. Mayor Jürgen Herzing said, "Ruth Weiss' life and work are an impressive example of courage, determination, and tireless commitment to justice."

In 2014, Weiss was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, and in 2024, she was honoured with the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 2023, she was also awarded the South African national order "Companion of O.R. Tambo".

The Ruth-Weiss Society, founded in 2019 by her circle of friends, aims to maintain her work and its values. Anni Kropf of the Ruth-Weiss Society promised to continue working to ensure that religion or skin color does not determine the value of people.

Weiss last visited Aschaffenburg in 2024, a testament to her deep connection to her homeland. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come, standing as a beacon of courage, determination, and unwavering commitment to justice and equality.
