In the true essence of Sonic 3, Shadow won't align with the depictions shaped by decades of edgy memes.

We're getting closer and closer to the launch of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and, more significantly, the conclusion of Sega's "Year of Shadow" with Keanu Reeves portraying the fan-adored speedster. The internet is buzzing with excitement for Sonic's rival as the reincarnation of coolness itself, but Sonic's Oscar-nominated director is urging fans to brace themselves for an origin story that outdoes the numerous memes associated with the character.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Jeff Fowler shared how his career has always been entwined with Sonic, from being a character animator on the game with Blur Studios to helming its Hollywood adaptation. Fowler assured fans that, as a fan involved in Shadow's 2005 standalone game, he has their interests at heart. However, he acknowledged that Shadow is more than just his edgy memes.

"'Coolness' might not be the correct term, but there was a new tone that suddenly made the Sonic world seem a little more thrilling, a little more dangerous," Fowler told EW. "I believe that's exactly what Shadow has achieved for this film."

Although fans have come to associate Shadow with gun-toting and motorcycle-riding badassery, Fowler wanted to make it clear that his origin in Sonic 3 will balance fan expectations while staying true to the film's family-friendly nature. This approach has been mirrored in the recently released Sonic X Shadow Generations; according to Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka, Shadow doesn't need guns because he's powerful enough as is.

"That's the challenge with these films," Fowler said. "It's to blend the elements of the video games and the comics with this movie treatment that we've developed. We're very respectful of fans' expectations and their love for the character, while also being mindful of the times and how to present such imagery in a family film. I believe we've struck a great balance. I think fans will enjoy watching this film and appreciate Shadow and Maria. A lot of thought and care has gone into telling Shadow's story and creating the best cinematic version of the character."

Of course, only time will tell if Sonic 3 fully leans into the memes depicting Shadow as John Wick or if it'll focus on a particularly controversial scene in his origins. Regardless, the film will leave an indelible mark on Sonic fans for years to come.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will speed into theaters on December 20.
