Gastronomic Tourism Conference Shifts to Bahrain, Emphasizing Economic Diversification and Inclusion Strategy

The 9th UN Tourism World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism is set to take place in Manama, Bahrain, from November 18 to 19, 2025 [1][2]. The event aims to promote gastronomy tourism as a major economic driver, with Bahrain aiming to generate $25 billion from this sector by 2025.

Leyla Fathallah, the One Planet Sustainable Tourism Programme coordinator (UNEP), Ehfaaz (UAE), and the Basque Culinary Center (BCC) will contribute to a session on food waste reduction. This is just one of the many topics that will be explored during the forum, which will also delve into the use of intellectual property and branding, preservation of culinary heritage, and food waste innovation.

Ministers of Tourism from around the world and from the Middle East will participate, along with award-winning chefs such as Chef Alejandra Espinoza and Chef Rudolf Stefan. Live cooking demonstrations by Bahraini chefs will showcase Bahrain's unique culinary traditions, while Grupo Sagardi from Spain will present authentic, high-quality culinary experiences.

The Collège Culinaire de France will be recognised for promoting quality dining and supporting artisans. LightBlue Consulting (Thailand) will lead a masterclass on circular solutions for food waste reduction. Meta will lead a masterclass on the impact of social media and technology in reshaping gastronomy tourism.

A panel discussion will explore building a destination's image through gastronomy. Experts from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the global Slow Food movement, and the Creative Tourism Network will address these topics. Tim Brooke-Webb, Managing Director of 50 Best, will participate, empowering chefs worldwide.

Participants can also explore Bahrain's rich cultural and historical heritage through side activities. The Forum is being held in the Kingdom of Bahrain for the first time. Registrations for the event are open until 31 October 2024. The 4th UN Tourism Global Gastronomy Tourism Startup Competition will take place during the forum, featuring startups from around the world.

Jordan's "From Farm to Fork" initiative will be highlighted as an example of sustainable culinary tourism. Sustainability discussions will focus on food waste reduction, circular economy principles, and local sourcing.
