Gain up to $840 in Delta SkyMiles and a complimentary airline ticket
The world of travel rewards can be overwhelming, but Delta Air Lines has simplified the process with its range of SkyMiles credit cards offered by American Express. Each card comes with its own unique benefits, reward rates, and annual fees. Here's a breakdown of the three tiers: the Delta SkyMiles Gold, Platinum, and Reserve cards.
Starting with the Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express Card, this card offers 2 miles per dollar on Delta purchases, at restaurants worldwide, including takeout and delivery in the U.S., and at U.S. supermarkets. It also provides a welcome offer of 50,000 Bonus Miles after spending $2,000 in eligible purchases in the first 6 months. The annual fee is $0 for the first year, then $150.
Next up is the Delta SkyMiles Platinum American Express Card. This card offers three miles per dollar on Delta purchases, two miles per dollar on restaurants and U.S. supermarkets, and one mile per dollar on all other qualified purchases. It also offers a free companion ticket each year after renewing the card, with some limitations, and a statement credit for either a Global Entry application fee or a TSA PreCheck application fee every 4.5 years, when charged to the Card. The annual fee is $350.
The Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card is the premium offering. It provides three miles per dollar on Delta purchases and one mile per dollar on all other eligible purchases. This card also offers an annual roundtrip companion pass, Centurion Lounge access when booking a Delta flight with the Card, Delta Sky Club lounge access, and four One-Time Guest Passes each Medallion Year. The annual fee is $650.
All three cards offer benefits like free baggage check on Delta flights, priority boarding, and 15% off when using miles to book Award Travel on Delta flights through delta.com and the Fly Delta app. Delta SkyMiles are worth 1.2 cents per mile, according to Bankrate.
It's worth noting that Delta was the most on-time North American airline in 2021, 2022, and 2023, according to airline analytics company Cirium. Additionally, Kiplinger readers voted the Delta Skymiles credit card program outstanding for customer service.
Lastly, Delta has recently announced changes to its SkyMiles American Express card benefits. These changes include the ability to collect Delta SkyMiles through German American Express cards via Membership Rewards points transfers, with tiered earning rates depending on the Medallion status. There are also opportunities for status match, status challenge via Hilton or Marriott statuses, and MQD waiver opportunities when combined with a Delta co-branded Amex card.
For those concerned about credit score checks, a new welcome offer allows applicants to check approval without a "hard pull" on their credit score.
Whether you're a frequent flyer or a casual traveller, there's a Delta SkyMiles American Express card that suits your needs. Make sure to weigh the benefits against the annual fees to find the card that offers the best value for you.
