France and Vietnam Strengthen Environmental Cooperation, Aiming for Greener Future

France and Vietnam have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening environmental cooperation. Acting Minister Trần Đức Thắng and French Minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher met in Paris on September 30, 2023, to discuss tangible actions towards their shared environmental goals.

The meeting comes as France, having reduced its carbon emissions by 30% since the 1990s, looks to support Vietnam's environmental efforts. France, among the top five contributors to international environmental projects, aims to assist Vietnam with its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and carbon credit exchange. Additionally, France seeks to help Vietnam combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and lift the IUU 'yellow card'.

Both nations aim to enhance their comprehensive strategic partnership, with key milestones including visits by President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in 2025. France hopes to bolster collaboration through initiatives like the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).

Vietnam, committed to maintaining over 10% growth while addressing environmental protection, has devised a strategy to achieve its COP26 Net Zero pledge. With France's support, Vietnam can accelerate its progress towards a greener future, building on their shared resolve to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution.
