Viet Hai Village in Hai Phong Achieves Community-Based Tourism Status

Viet Hai village, nestled within the heart of Cat Ba National Park and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago, has been officially recognized as the 13th community-based tourism destination and a pilot site for sustainable, green tourism development from 2025 to 2030.

The focus of this development is to preserve the village’s unique natural landscapes, rich ecological environment, and cultural identity. Authorities, led by Pham Thi To Trang, Deputy Director of the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, have emphasized the importance of safeguarding natural resources and the biodiversity of Cat Ba National Park, while promoting local cultural identity and peaceful traditional lifestyles.

Key elements of the sustainable tourism development include preservation, regulations, and investment opportunities. Preservation efforts aim to raise community awareness of the heritage value of Viet Hai, ensuring active participation in conservation efforts. Regulations involve local hamlets developing cultural village conventions and implementing a comprehensive Green Transformation Plan for 2025–2030. This plan includes implementing green goals across various sectors such as transportation, tourism operations, energy, environment, and agriculture.

Investment opportunities are encouraged in eco-friendly and green infrastructure to support and scale-up sustainable tourism models that benefit local livelihoods while minimizing environmental impact. Potential areas for investment include clean energy, eco-tourism facilities, green transport, and sustainable agricultural practices.

Viet Hai consists of two hamlets, home to 87 households and 295 residents, in the Cat Hai special zone. The Vice Chairman of the Cat Hai People's Committee, Vu Huu Vuong, has emphasized the importance of raising community awareness about the significance of Viet Hai. Close coordination will continue between relevant agencies and Cat Ba National Park to safeguard Viet Hai's natural resources and develop its community-based tourism model.

The development of Viet Hai's community-based tourism model is aimed to become a flagship attraction for the special zone and the city. The village's unique cultural identity and the simple, peaceful lifestyle of its people are attractions for visitors, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and those seeking tranquil, unspoiled beauty. The new designation is expected to help preserve its natural and cultural assets, unlock opportunities for socio-economic growth, improve local livelihoods, and advance Hai Phong's community tourism ambitions.
