Festivities in Weingarten impress with views, sounds, and time-tested premise
In Weingarten, local clubs employ the strategy of outdoor food and drink events, such as the Tower Festival, to attract visitors. This year, the festival, organized by the choral society Frohsinn and the wrestling club SV Germania, saw a significant turnout under ideal weather conditions.
From 11 AM, the area adjacent to Tower Hill was crowded, with visitors flocking to enjoy the sunny, yet comfortable weather. The festival, renowned for its unique atmosphere and panoramic view of the town, offers a steak, sausage, and fries selection by the wrestlers, and a varieties of cake, coffee, and champagne from the singers.
The festival derives its name from the historic watchtower located next to the plaza, over 400 years old and fortified with battlements. The spacious plateau at the foot of the tower is easily accessible by foot from the town center and by car from the back, making it an ideal location for celebrations.
Originally held on a private property in the town's outskirts, former chairman Helfried Mieden reported that the festival was moved to a central location in town due to aging helpers and long visitor walks.
The festival is a popular destination for both locals and day-trippers, offering a great opportunity for rest during Ascension Day, traditionally a day for hiking and cycling. Although the crowd mainly consists of the older generation, younger visitors also attend the event, often drawn by the tempting cakes on offer.
The Elevator Jazz Ensemble from Karlsruhe provided background music with subtle tunes on the piano, bass, drums, and clarinet, allowing conversations to continue uninterrupted. The weather remains the only uncertain factor, with the festival only being canceled in about 15 years due to adverse conditions.
The festival kicked off at 11 AM on Thursday, with the first beers on tap, and a long line at the cash register forming an hour or two later. Mieden expresses his gratitude for the assistance from the SV Germania, whose numerous members helped manage the crowd, as his club alone would not have been able to handle it.
