The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Culture and Art Festival kicked off on September 16, 2025, and is set to last for a month, with events spanning across 11 cities. This grand celebration of arts and culture features over 100 performances, 19 exhibitions, and more than 150 community events.

The festival began with a bang, as the "Symphony of the Greater Bay Area" concert took centre stage. This concert featured seven compositions highlighting Guangdong's most outstanding original symphonic works from recent years.

The National Theatre of China is presenting the modern drama "The Yellow Storm," while the Guangdong Yue Opera Theatre's production "Samsui Women" tells an inspiring story of female resilience. The Shanghai Yue Opera House will showcase its classic interpretation of the literary masterpiece A Dream of Red Mansions with its Yue Opera adaptation of the same name.

Several acclaimed international troupes have chosen the festival as their first stop in China. The Greek National Opera made their debut with a performance of the classic opera "La Traviata," while Russia's Vakhtangov Theatre presented "Eugene Onegin" and "Uncle Vanya," both praised for their embodiment of Russian literary giants.

The international theater groups presenting first in China at this year's Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Culture and Art Festival also include Matthew Bourne's all-male "Swan Lake," known for its innovative ensemble.

Local audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy world-class art without having to travel far during the festival. Five internationally acclaimed musical theatre stars shared the stage for the first time at the GBA, performing 26 pieces of classic musicals.

The festival consists of five categories of events: "Arts in the Bay" performance series, "Resonance in Arts" art lectures, "Shared Aesthetics" art exhibitions, "Art in Daily Life" activities, and the "Radiance of Arts" performing arts fair. The 16th China (Guangzhou) International Performing Arts Fair, scheduled from September 25 to 28, will bring together nearly 300 performing arts institutions from 20 countries and regions, showcasing nearly 1,000 productions.

This cultural extravaganza is jointly sponsored by four entities: the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China, the People's Government of Guangdong Province, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), and the Government of the Macao SAR.

In addition to these events, the festival will also host "Confucius," a dance drama by the China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater, and the Southern Song and Dance Troupe's "I Like You," which bridges tradition and modernity by integrating Yingge Dance with musical theatre.

With such a diverse and exciting lineup, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Culture and Art Festival promises to be an unforgettable celebration of arts and culture.
