Fed up with visitors risking their necks for the 'perfect' photo, authorities in Étretat, Normandy, have taken swift action. Strict safety measures have been put in place to protect tourists from deadly accidents caused by falling rocks and erosion.
Access to certain areas has been restricted, and it’s now forbidden to walk through the famous rock arches beneath the cliffs. Beach access has been largely banned, except for the stretch along the promenade in Étretat. Three popular rock formations have also been off-limits to tourists.
Visitors can now approach the cliff edge at most only up to five meters, and ignoring the new restrictions comes with a minimum fine of 35 euros. Anyone requiring a rescue will have to foot the bill for fire department services, except in extreme cases.
The dangers at Étretat's cliffs have become increasingly apparent, with numerous fatal accidents reported in the past. Tourists caught close to the edge, desperate for a selfie, have paid the ultimate price.
The fire department issued warnings about the hazards posed by both the top and base of the cliffs in a 2022 video, suggesting that people were taking more risks than ever to get the perfect photo. The cliffs, towering at approximately 90 meters, are simply too unstable to be taken lightly.
Visitors are urged to park further away from the cliffs, wear sturdy footwear, and exercise extreme caution on the challenging terrain. Cliff paths have been closed due to dangerous instability, and protective railings have been installed near steep drops to discourage risky behavior.
