In the heart of Madhya Pradesh, India, a unique and inspiring tourism initiative is taking shape. The Homestay Initiative, launched by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, is transforming rural villages into cultural hotspots, empowering women, and promoting sustainable growth.
One such village is Ladpura Khas, located just 8 kilometres from Orchha. This picturesque village, designated as the first Rural Tourism Village under the Responsible Tourism initiative, offers a warm and authentic welcome to travellers. Here, hospitality is centred around food and people, with hosts offering local cuisine and cultural experiences that immerse travellers in the rich tapestry of Madhya Pradesh.
At Mahua Hill Homestay, run by Uma Devi, guests can experience the hospitality first-hand. The homestay, like many others in Ladpura Khas, is modest yet comfortable, featuring one room per owner and amenities such as comfortable beds, couches, tables, bamboo ceilings, wall paintings, and bamboo decor.
Ladpura Khas is particularly charming during the monsoon and winter seasons, from August to March. During these months, the village comes alive with the vibrant colours of its Chanderi textiles, a craft for which Pranpur, nearby Chanderi, is renowned. Travellers can witness the art of weaving up close, as Pranpur serves as a living museum of craftsmanship, allowing them to observe loom-making and participate in workshops.
The Homestay Initiative is not just about providing comfortable accommodation; it's about empowering women and generating livelihoods. In Ladpura Khas, all staff at Madhav Hill View Homestay are women, who have been trained in self-defence to ensure their safety and confidence. Moreover, e-rickshaws driven by women provide mobility and independence in the community.
The impact of the Homestay Initiative extends beyond Ladpura Khas. The programme aims to establish 1,000 homestays across 37 districts in Madhya Pradesh, including Orchha, Khajuraho, Bandhavgarh, Kanha, and Pench. This expansion is expected to enrich existing tourist circuits and attract more travellers, as evidenced by the 526% rise in tourist footfall in Madhya Pradesh in 2024 compared to 2020.
The Gwalior Tourism Conclave, announced by Mr. Mahanaaryaman Rao Scindia, Youth Leader and Prince of Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, further boosts tourism in the region. An investment of INR 3,500 crore was announced at the conclave, promising a bright future for rural tourism in Madhya Pradesh.
Another gem in Madhya Pradesh is Sabarvani, a Gond Tribal haven in the Chhindwara district. Spanning nearly 2,000 hectares, Sabarvani is home to about 700 Gond residents. Here, travellers can enjoy nature walks, traditional cuisine, and immerse themselves in Gond art and folklore.
