Navagio Beach, a Stunning Greek Gem

Situated on the western coast of Greece, the island of Zakynthos hides a secret jewel - Navagio Beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach. A sandy cove nestled amidst towering limestone cliffs, this Greek paradise boasts the rusting remains of an ancient shipwreck, making it an Instagram goldmine for travelers.

If you're planning to explore this secluded corner of Greece, we've got you covered! Here's a practical guide to help you visit this picturesque beach in all its glory.

Welcome to Zakynthos

Known for being one of Greece's quieter islands, Zakynthos is a paradise waiting to be discovered. With its crystal-clear waters, rich history, and warm hospitality, it attracts visitors who crave authentic Greek experiences.

Location and Travel

Navagio Beach, known locally as Navagio Beach, lies on the northwest tip of Zakynthos Island. The island is situated about 250 km west of Athens in the Ionian Sea. To reach Zakynthos, you can:

  1. Fly directly from Athens, or
  2. Take a ferry from Kyllini on the mainland. Ferries operate 7 times per day between 5:30am and 10:30pm, and the fare is approximately €10 per person each way, or €35 for a car.

Reaching the Beach

Cliff Top Viewpoints

The iconic postcard images of Shipwreck Beach are captured from the top of the 200 meter (650 ft) tall cliffs. While the beach itself offers breathtaking beauty, the vistas from the cliffs are truly awe-inspiring.

Viewing Platform

Unfortunately, the platform closest to the parking area doesn't offer the best views, and tourist officials could greatly enhance the experience by improving this facility. However, if you're willing to venture a bit, a hidden trail leads to more spectacular vistas.

Cliff Walk

To find the best photo opportunities, step outside the viewing platform to the right. While the unkempt path may not be suitable for everyone, it does lead to some jaw-dropping views. The ideal time to explore is around noon when the sun is directly overhead, providing excellent lighting, or during sunset for a magical experience.

Beach Visit via Boat

To actually set foot on the pristine beach, you'll need to join one of the many affordable boat tours operating from nearby towns such as Agios Nikolaos. During the boat ride, you'll also get to admire other stunning spots along the Zakynthos coastline, like the Blue Caves and Xygia Sulfur Beach.

Keep in mind that the beach can get quite crowded due to its popularity. The earlier you book a boat tour or rent a private vessel, the fewer visitors you'll encounter and the longer you can enjoy the idyllic beach.

History of the Shipwreck

The shipwreck at Shipwreck Cove originally belonged to a 157 foot vessel called the MV Panagiotis, which ran aground here on October 2nd, 1980. It appears the ship was smuggling cigarettes from Turkey for the Italian mafia when the Greek Navy started chasing it in rough weather. Despite the crew's efforts to escape, the ship wrecked on the shores of Navagio Cove. Since then, the rusting shipwreck has become an integral part of the beach's charm and allure.
