Explore the Indian Loop Trail

Garmin inReach Mini 2 - When I need 100% reliable SOS coverage, this is what I take in the backountry.

After the devastating Sawtooth Complex Fire, the area surrounding the Indian Loop Trail was almost entirely destroyed. Before the fire, the preserve teemed with Joshua Trees, old-growth California Juniper, and centenarian pinyon pines. Despite the recovery, many native species threatened by climate change are believed to have vanished, never to return.

A Conservation Tale: The Wildlands Conservancy

AllTrails Plus - (30% off link) Up-to-date trip reports. Plus adds offline maps, off-trail alerts, and Garmin sync.

The Wildlands Conservancy, California's largest nonprofit nature preserve system, was founded right here. The land was once a hub for illegal activities, such as poaching, criminal gunfire, ATV scrambling, and drug abuse. Two local brothers aimed to restore the land and placed a "to conservation-minded buyers only" ad in the LA Times. Since then, the Conservancy has protected more than 90,000 acres of wilderness in California.

The Changing Face of Pipes Canyon

Garmin Fenix 8 - Took a few updates to get right, but now it's rock solid for me. I use it for maps, tracking, and routing.

Once, Pipe Wash flowed regularly and created a natural pond known as Yucca Beach. Unfortunately, today the creek doesn't provide enough flow for the pond. Pipes Canyon Road used to extend all the way to Big Bear, but after the TWC purchased the land, they removed the road, and locals unsuccessfully campaigned to restore it.

A Desert Paradise with a Monumental Future

The Sand to Snow National Monument was inspired by the TWC's efforts to safeguard crucial wildlife corridors linking the Mojave and Sonoran deserts with the San Bernardino Mountains. Although Pioneertown Mountains Preserve is privately owned and not officially part of the monument, it is an essential component to the monument's mission as the most biodiverse of all national monuments in the United States.

Tackle the Indian Loop Trail

Known as "Chapparal" in Spanish, Chaparrosa Peak refers to the dense shrubbery that once covered the summit. John Olson, a Swedish onyx miner who lived here from the 1920s, met a tragic end in 1945 at the hands of an Army deserter. Learn more about Olson's life at this old article.
