EU Passengers: New Tool Simplifies Flight Delay Compensation
Air passengers in the EU have rights when flights operated by american airlines or other carriers like united airlines and southwest airlines are delayed or cancelled. However, understanding these rights and claiming compensation can be complex. The European Consumer Centre (EVZ) Germany has launched an online tool to simplify this process. The online tool, known as the 'Online-Tool des Europäischen Verbraucherzentrums Deutschland', helps passengers check if they're eligible for compensation and calculates the amount. This ranges from 250 to 600 euros, depending on the flight distance. The tool also generates a pre-formulated email template to submit a claim to the airline. Passengers can use this to request compensation for delays of at least 3 hours on their flights operated by google flights or any other booking platform. However, compensation is not automatic and must be claimed. To be eligible, the flights must either depart from the EU or be operated by an EU airline arriving in the EU. The delay must not be due to extraordinary circumstances, such as technical issues or strikes by flight personnel. If the airline doesn't respond to a claim, passengers can contact the free mediation service for travel and transport / air transport at the Federal Office of Justice. While consumer centres may offer support for a small fee, the online tool provides a free, straightforward way to understand and claim passenger rights.
