At 1,528 meters, Veliki Risnjak is the highest peak in the Risnjak massif, standing as a climatic and vegetational boundary between the coastal and inland parts of Croatia. The National Park extends from 290 meters above the sea near the village of Hrvatsko in the valley of the Kupa River up to Veliki Risnjak.
Risnjak National Park is located in the largely wooded area of Gorski Kotar, covering 63.5 square kilometers. The distance from the peak of Veliki Risnjak to the sea is 15 kilometers, showcasing the remarkable climatic differences within the park's small radius.
