Unholy Temple: The Evolution and Controversy of Megapark in Mallorca's Nightlife Scene

Stepping onto the sandy shores of El Arenal, you'll find an architectural marvel that isn't a cathedral, but a temple of another kind—the Megapark. With its 25th anniversary fast approaching, let's take a look at the party paradox that is the Megapark, a beacon of pulsating beats and intoxicating spirits on the Ballermann strip.

In the early 2000s, Bartolomé Cursach, the man behind several nightlife establishments on the island, unveiled the Megapark to counter the burgeoning popularity of the Bierkönig. Known for offering free beer and sangria, as well as live performances by notable German party singers, it quickly became a prime attraction for party-goers. In 2004, the building was razed to make way for the structure that stands today, often described as a "huge act of blasphemy" due to its cathedral-like exterior hiding a party and drinking temple within.

Cursach, the island's unofficial nightlife king, remains an elusive figure, avoiding interviews and often finding himself in legal battles on Mallorca. Intriguing, some dub him the "Cristiano Ronaldo of Mallorcan nightlife," yet others criticize his methods and commercial nature.

As twilight descends on the Ballermann, the Megapark transforms into a Las Vegas-style haven. The XXL indoor beer garden coalesces with a large disco, accessible via an escalator, intoxicating the senses of partygoers, especially the younger crowd. Stars like Lorenz Büffel, Isi Glück, and Mickie Krause reign over the stage, while international DJs, influencers, and rappers entertain the masses. With rare appearances by top-earners like Eko Fresh, Die Atzen, and Finch, the energy is electrifying, fueled by the inflated prices of beers and long drinks.

Yet, some argue the Megapark is only in it for the money, with steep fees for live shows and exclusive areas. Matthias Distel, known as Ikke Hüftgold in Ballermann circles, finds a stark contrast between the Megapark and the Bierkönig, viewing the latter as a welcoming expression of culture compared to the former's relentless commerce. Prices soar within the emporium, with a liter of beer almost reaching 19 euros, leaving many to question if the Megapark will ultimately pay the price during the peak summer months.

Competition with figures like Mickie Krause and the Bierkönig has placed the Megapark in the limelight throughout the years. Some argue that the venue has surpassed the beer king as a popular party location, further solidifying its place in Mallorca's nightlife history.

From its controversial genesis to its continued evolution, the Megapark remains a mysterious, yet undeniable cultural tour de force in Mallorca's party-centric economy. For better or for worse, the enduring spirit of this colossal institution has no plans to fade into the sunset anytime soon.

The Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, given Bartolomé Cursach's frequent legal battles on Mallorca.

Cursach, notable for his rapport with party singers like Jürgen Drews, could swap the party scene for a more tranquil lifestyle in home-and-garden hobbies, or even dabble in the fashion-and-beauty industry.

In Palma de Mallorca's bustling nightlife, the Megapark and Mickie Krause's Bierkönig have been locked in a sports-like competition for over a decade, engaging in a thrilling dance of strategy and commercialism.

Given the extraordinary prices within the Megapark and its cathedral-like exterior, Matthias Distel, known as Ikke Hüftgold, argues that the venue's commercial nature resembles that of a gleaming church tower in the heart of Las Vegas—a spectacle meant to attract, but not necessarily worshiping the local culture.
