In the heart of Hesse, nestled near the historic border between Hesse and Thuringia, lies the charming village of Rasdorf. This small town, first mentioned in a document in 815 under the name "Ratestorph," boasts a rich history that spans over a thousand years.

The Rasdorf Anger, the largest village square in Hesse, measures 170 x 75 m, and has served as a communal space for gatherings and markets, reflecting the region's rural heritage. Originally, the Anger was used as a cattle pasture, but over time, it developed into a significant trading and transshipment point on the Frankfurt-Leipzig route (Antsanvia).

Rasdorf's strategic location also made it an important resting place for pilgrims on their way to the Gehilfersberg. The Gehilfersberg pilgrimage is a well-known religious tradition in the area, with the Gehilfersberg hill near Rasdorf featuring a pilgrimage chapel and drawing pilgrims due to its spiritual significance and scenic location.

One of the most unique aspects of Rasdorf is its fortified cemetery, a rarity in Hesse. This historical site showcases the defensive structures of bygone eras, featuring a high wall, four watchtowers, and loopholes. This fortified cemetery offers a unique insight into defensive structures of past eras and is a rare sight in Hesse.

The tour of Rasdorf's past takes approximately 1.5 hours and provides a glimpse into the town's rich history. The tour offers exciting stories from Rasdorf’s past, shedding light on its blend of religious, historical, and cultural importance tied to regional movements, religious traditions, and Cold War history.

The tour is conducted in the local dialect, and no prior registration is required. The admission fee for the tour is 4 euros per person, to be paid directly to the tour guide on site.

Rasdorf's history is a testament to the town's resilience and its role in shaping the region's past. A visit to Rasdorf allows you to step back in time and experience the charm and rich history of this small but significant town.
