Aeroflot's flight fails to deliver tourists to Sochi
On August 8, Aeroflot's flight from Moscow to Sochi faced unexpected challenges. Initially scheduled to depart at 11:15, the flight was delayed until 14:00. However, instead of reaching its destination, the plane diverted to Astrakhan due to a lack of parking spots at the Sochi airport.
This incident was part of a series of disruptions that Aeroflot experienced in August 2022, primarily due to a cyberattack on the airline's computer systems. The attack, claimed by pro-Ukrainian hacker groups Silent Crow and Belarusian Cyber-Partisans, caused widespread disruption, including the cancellation of dozens of flights on popular domestic routes like Moscow to Sochi.
The cyberattack resulted in severe operational difficulties. Aeroflot's electronic systems were disrupted, affecting scheduling and flight operations. Over 50 flights were cancelled on the day of the attack, with long delays reported at major airports like Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport. The airline had to prioritize some routes while trying to restore normal service, but no precise timeline was given for full recovery.
Stranded passengers experienced long waits, some being asked to leave terminals to reduce crowding. Compensation and rebooking were promised once systems were restored. This incident represents one of the most significant cyber disruptions to Russia’s largest airline since the full-scale conflict with Ukraine began, showing the impact of cyber warfare on critical infrastructure such as airlines.
As a result of the delays and cancellations, many tourists had to cancel their trips after returning to Moscow. Some passengers purchased new tickets with different airlines as there were no more available seats on future Aeroflot flights. Aeroflot refunded the money of the passengers for the cancelled flight and kept the return tickets valid.
Emotions ran high among passengers, particularly those traveling with children. The Aeroflot flight from Moscow to Sochi, scheduled to depart from Sheremetyevo airport, was further delayed until 17:30 on August 8. The airspace over Sochi closed again at 19:40, forcing the plane to return to Moscow, where it arrived at 21:40.
Some tourists decided not to fly again due to the cancelled flight and short vacation. On the day before August 8, Aeroflot had transported passengers who landed in Astrakhan further. Despite the challenges, Aeroflot kept the return tickets of the passengers for the cancelled flight valid.
