Baden-Württemberg's summer holidays are just around the corner, and with it comes the expected increase in traffic congestion. The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Interior has advised travelers to plan for extra time, particularly on the highways, due to ongoing construction work and increased holiday travel.

One of the hotspots for congestion during the summer travel period is the A8 (Stuttgart–Karlsruhe near Pforzheim). The ongoing construction works on this motorway are expected to cause significant delays.

While other major highways in Baden-Württemberg, such as A5, A6, A7, A81, and B31, may also experience congestion due to holiday travel, no specific major construction congestion spots on these routes were identified. However, given the general presence of about 1,000 construction sites nationwide and the heavy holiday traffic caused by staggered school breaks, traffic jams are likely on several major routes.

It's worth noting that Baden-Württemberg has not yet started its summer holidays as of late July 2025, unlike many other federal states. This means traffic congestion may increase once holidays begin, intensifying typical peak season traffic.

The staggered summer vacation schedules across Germany aim to prevent simultaneous mass departures that would exacerbate congestion. However, the remaining holiday periods in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria will still generate heavy traffic flows.

An additional point to consider is the closure of the A81 highway from 10:00 PM on Friday to 5:00 AM on Sunday due to construction work. Local detours have been set up and signposted for travelers.

In light of these circumstances, drivers are advised to plan ahead for longer travel times on these corridors during the summer holidays and check for live construction updates and traffic reports in Baden-Württemberg. The Ministry of the Interior also expects high traffic due to the start and continuation of summer holidays in 14 federal states.
